Advancement Procedures:
Merit Badge Procedure For Scouts

THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE WILL BE USED TO EARN A MERIT BADGE.

SCOUT:
1. The Scout selects the merit badge he wishes to earn.

2. The Scout seeks approval from his Scoutmaster or Troop Advancement Chairman.

SCOUTMASTER:
1. The Scoutmaster approves the Scout's request to work on a specific merit badge by providing the Scout a merit badge application, signed under APPROVAL OF LEADER.
This is the only place the Scoutmaster signs at this time.

2. The following blanks must be filled prior to giving the application to the Scout: troop number, district, date, name, street, city, zip code, phone, merit badge, date Scoutmaster signed, and Scoutmaster's signature.

3. Together, the Scoutmaster, or the Troop Advancement Chairman, and the Scout select a Merit Badge Counselor from a CURRENT Merit Badge Counselor List.

4. While at summer camp, refer to the Summer Camp Leaders packet for the merit badges offered.

SCOUT:
1. The Scout contacts the Merit Badge Counselor and arranges an appointment.

2. The Scout meets with the Merit Badge Counselor, using the buddy system.

3. The Scout earns the merit badge, with the help of the Merit Badge Counselor, using the buddy system.

MERIT BADGE COUNSELOR:
1. The Merit Badge Counselor initials the requirements earned by the Scout. Upon completion, the Merit Badge Counselor finishes the APPROVAL OF MERIT BADGE COUNSELOR portion.

2. The Merit Badge Counselor completes the Scout's Record and signs it.

3. The Merit Badge Counselor completes the Counselor's Record and keeps it.

SCOUT:
1. The Scout asks the Scoutmaster to sign the Scout's portion of the application.

2. The Scout removes and keeps the Scout's Record.

3. The Scout gives the top portion of his completed Merit Badge application to his Troop Advancement Chairman.

TROOP ADVANCEMENT CHAIRMAN:
1. The Troop Advancement Chairman records the earned merit badge on the Scout's Individual Scout Record.

2. The Troop Advancement Chairman records the earned merit badge on the troop's monthly advancement report.

3. The troop's monthly advancement report is taken to the Council Office.

COUNCIL OFFICE:
1. The Council Office records the advancement on the Council Advancement Report.

2. The Council Office sells the troop's representative the card and patch for the earned merit badge.

SCOUTMASTER:
1. The Scoutmaster presents the merit badge at the next Court of Honor or equivalent ceremony.
