Tall Pine Council Protects Michigan's Waters
Tall Pine Council is a proud participant in the “Reel In and Recycle” monofilament recycling program. Monofilament is a type of fishing line made from plastic. When discarded monofilament enters water bodies, it causes a variety of problems for people and wildlife. As a lake owner, we have a vested interested in keeping the Great Lakes and waters of Michigan vibrant and healthy.
What is the Reel In and Recycle program?
The “Reel In and Recycle” monofilament recycling program is a BoatU.S. campaign aimed at reducing marine debris. Program participants are asked to mount and monitor a recycling bin and sign, periodically empty the bin contents, and ship the fishing line to Berkley Conservation Institute for recycling. The recovered fishing line (along with other postconsumer materials) is recycled into artificial fish habitat structures – bringing the material back to anglers in a useful form. As a local sponsor of the campaign, the Michigan Clean Marina Program has distributed over 30 bins to popular fishing areas at marinas, harbors and boating access sites throughout the state. Tall Pine Council is one of such places to host a recycling bin, providing easy access for anglers to recycle fishing line.
How is Boy Scouts Helping?
- We’ve mounted two bins and signage at Camp Holaka and Camp Tapico.
- We encourage anglers to deposit unwanted fishing line in the bin.
- Our staff periodically empties the bin and ships the discarded fishing line to the program’s recycling facility. Through an online database staff track how much fishing line we have recovered.
Why Should All Michiganders Participate?
Fishing line typically takes over 500 years to breakdown, making it a long-lasting nuisance in our lakes. Both humans and wildlife often realize the consequences. Boat propellers may be jammed by large webs of discarded line. Aquatic wildlife – including fish, turtles and birds – become entangled in unintended “nets” of fishing line, leading to strangulation, drowning or starvation.

Local and National Tour Permits Are Now The Tour Plan
Effective March 1, 2011, what are currently known as local and national tour permits will be superseded by what will be called the tour plan. The online tour permit system will be suspended. This update is the accumulation of work by a cross-functional team of volunteers and staff including the Health and Safety Support Committee, Council Solutions, Outdoor Program Group, and Risk Management Advisory Panels.
Here is the definition of the tour plan in the Language of Scouting: "Units complete this form when planning for local, national, or international adventure. The plan helps ensure the unit is properly prepared, that qualified and trained leadership is in place, and that the right equipment is available for the adventure."
The plan is available by visiting the following link: http://www.scouting.org/filestore/pdf/680-014_fillable.pdf

Policy on Scout Participation
in Political Events
-
Uniformed unit members and leaders
may participate in flag ceremonies at political
events and may lead the Pledge of Allegiance; however,
they should retire after the ceremony and not remain
on the speakers’ platform or in a conspicuous
location where television viewers could construe
their presence as an endorsement or symbol of support.
In addition, photos of candidates or Scouts in uniform
or BSA marks and logos are not allowed in political
campaign materials of any kind.
Volunteers and professionals
must be alert to situations that would imply that
the BSA favors one candidate over another. Strict
observance of our long-standing policy against the
active participation of uniformed Scouts and leaders
in political events is mandatory.
Please notify your chartered
organizations and unit leaders of this policy.
