Boy Scouting Recognition and Advancement

General Guidelines

Advancement is one of the eight methods used by Scout leaders to help boys fulfill the aims of the BSA. Properly used, a troop's advancement program can tie together and energize the other seven methods: The ideals (Oath, Law, Motto, Slogan); Patrol method; Outdoors; Association with adults; Personal growth; Leadership development; The Uniform. Just as advancement helps unite the other seven methods of Scouting, completing requirements and moving upward in rank are natural outcomes of a troop's regular activities. The more interesting the program offered by a troop, the better its record of advancement.
The Boy Scout Advancement Program encourages boys to meet significant challenges that lead to personal growth. As a Scout works his way from Tenderfoot through Eagle, the requirements he must successfully complete will help him develop physically, emotionally, and morally into manhood. There are four steps to advancement through the ranks from Tenderfoot to Eagle: 1) A Scout learns; 2) A Scout is tested; 3) A Scout is reviewed; 4) A Scout is recognized.

For more information, see the Scoutmaster Handbook, the Boy Scout Handbook, or The Tall Pine Council Scout Leader's Advancement Procedures Guidebook - All of which are available in the Scout Shop.

Once Boy Scouts in the Tall Pine Council reach the rank of Star, they have the opportunity to attend a Star to Life Seminar. This seminar is for Boys who want to achieve the rank of Eagle. The boy and his parents are invited to come to the seminar and learn the process of achieving the rank of Life and Eagle, and how best to achieve their Scouting goals.
The seminar lasts for approximately two hours, and it is strongly recommended that Boy Scouts attend. It is the only way the boys may attain a copy of the Star Seminar Packet. The packet contains originals and copies of the forms, requirements, procedures, and planning for the boys to work their way to the rank of Life and Eagle.

For more information or to sign up for the next Star to Life Seminar, call the Scout Office: (810) 235-2531.

Information and applications for Meritorious Awards, National Camping Awards, Religious Awards and various District Awards are available at the Scout Office and in the Scout Shop.
